According to Bengals.com Mike Zimmer confirmed Tuesday in a text message he is returning to the Bengals as defensive coordinator.
It was reported Saturday by NFL.com’s Steve Wyche that the Bengals were going to discuss a new deal to retain the coach. The Bengals must have hammered out a deal quickly just before Zimmer left for Dallas to see his son (Adam), who is the New Orleans Saints assistant linebackers coach.
According to Wyche, the deal is for three years.
Obviously, this is a huge signing by the Cincinnati Bengals and credit is due to Mike Brown and his family for making a deal so soon.
Zimmer had been rumored to become the Washington Redskins defensive coordinator despite his own multiple attempts to squash those rumors. His success in Cincinnati has also drew mentions of potential head-coaching opportunities.
As a fan, it is great to know Zimmer will be coming back in 2010.
A big factor in his decision had to be the Cincinnati Bengals players, whom he developed a special relationship with in 2009.
