Fui Vakapuna returns to Bengals

by on November 3, 2009

The agent of fullback Fui Vakapuna told Bengals.com that his client has joined the Cincinnati Bengals 53-man roster.

After being cut by the Bengals after training camp, Vakapuna signed with the Arizona Cardinals’ practice squad.

However, last week the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed fellow fullback Chris Pressley off the Bengals’ practice squad.

Both fullbacks were featured heavily on HBO’s series “Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Cincinnati Bengals (video above).”

It was expected that the Bengals were going to keep two fullbacks on their roster this season because of Jeremi Johnson’s questionable health.

Right now, Johnson’s health is in question again after spraining his knee against Chicago. The injury wasn’t expected to take Johnson out of this Sunday’s game, however he did not practice on Monday.

Attendance: At the start of today, Nov. 2, the Bengals still had 4,500 tickets remaining for Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens. That means the Bengals only sold 500 tickets between Friday morning and this morning, which is a little hard to believe.

What is up with us not selling out the game? We’re 5 and 2. Is it the economy? Apathy on the part of Bengals fans? I don’t get it. Someone please explain it to me.

They’ve earned a sell out. They’re playing well. What more do we expect them to do. Any other town would have sold out the game with a 5-2 record, including Cleveland. What does that say about us and southern Ohio? Essentially, any game we’ve sold out this season is b/c the opposing fans were within in a 6-hour drive and came down for the game.

Secondly, and more importantly how do you think this makes our team feel? I know they get paid to play, but it has to contribute to their mentality when they get on the field, knowing the home crowd isn’t there to support them. I feel like I owe the Cincinnati Bengals an apology. Now, how strange does that sound?

Come on Bengals fans! Your team needs you. This is a division game. They beat the Broncos and we can beat them. If the Stillers lose to the Broncos on Monday, we hold the AFC North lead by ourselves. We need your support!

Altho I really liked Fui on Hard Knocks he’s not the fullback that Jeremi Johnson is. I would venture to say that the reason the Bengals are doing so well this year are the performances of Chad Ocho, Carson Palmer, and Jeremi Johnson. All three have stepped up on the offense and provided the attitude that has changed the team into a winner. Hopefully Jeremi’s knee problem won’t keep out of the Raven’s game, and maybe they can use Fui to give him some support.

Oooh. I’m not saying Jeremi isn’t playing well, he clearly his, but I would rank his offensive contribution behind those of the entire line, Ced, CP, 85, Calwell…maybe even Brian Leonard. I’m not just saying that because FB isn’t a standout position. Sorry to nitpick.

Personally, I wanted to see Brian Leonard listed as a second FB with DeDe added to the RB depth chart. Clearly he wasn’t necessary, though, with Benson’s performance this year.

Welcome aboard Jungle Fever…from now on if you use the same username you should be able to post freely and not have to wait for me to moderate the message.

Anyways, I agree. I actually don’t like J. Johnson – he is out of shape. However, after having Daniel Coats back there (no true fullback) last year, it is nice to have a true fullback in the lineup. Overall, he his solid play has surprised me.

Fui is still a bit of a project. But he is big and athletic. I am sure he has no problems running to line of the scrimmage and putting a helmet on somebody.

I would also have loved to see DeDe, but Leonard is a much better third-down back – his heart alone has come up big fighting for those extra yards for first downs (especially in the Steelers game). Dorsey’s punt blocking ability is also missed.

If you were wondering, Dorsey is playing for the Las Vegas Locomotives of the UFL.
