Chase Coffman is improving, but must be a long way from starting in the NFL as the Bengals tried to trade for Cowboys tight end Martellus Bennett.

According to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, the Cincinnati Bengals went after Dallas Cowboys tight end Martellus Bennett at the trading deadline.

“Don’t know exactly what the Bengals were offering in return. Bennett was a 2nd round pick in ‘08 & is part of ‘Boys frequent 2 TE package,” Mortensen wrote on his twitter page.

Bennett, 6-foot-6 253 pounds, was drafted in the second round in the 2008 NFL Draft. In his rookie season, Bennett caught 20 passes for 283 yards and four touchdowns.

This season, Bennett has only four catches for 40 yards.

The Bengals starting tight end Daniel Coats has a couple of fumbles (lost one) and has dropped a couple of passes in each of his last two games. For the season, Coats has 12 receptions for 118 yards and no touchdowns.

Cincinnati’s other tight end John Paul (J.P.) Foschi had a big fumble in last week’s 28-17 loss to the Houston Texans. Foschi has seven receptions for 71 yards and no touchdowns this season.

Acquiring Bennett would have upgraded the Bengals depleted tight end position that lost Reggie Kelly and Ben Utecht to injury before the season started. Kelly and Utecht are both on injured reserve (IR) and cannot play this season.

The Bengals third-round pick in the 2009 NFL Draft tight end Chase Coffman is improving, but has yet to be active for a game this season. Coffman is a good receiving tight end that obviously lacks the needed blocking skills.

The Bengals knew about Kelly and Utecht early in the preseason and managed to leave that hole unplugged for the regular season. Now they are looking for someone to stick a finger in the dam and hope that it holds. Its a little too late for that! The water looks like it is pouring over the dam already!

Someone please tell me what the deal is with Coffman? Has he even suited up for a game? Kelly is missed but I think Foschi (The Italian Stallion) is an upgrade from Utecht. Coats reminds me of Tony McGee. Dropping the easy ones. Let’s hope he can turn it around.
